It was first found in 1782 in the gold-bearing ores of Transylvania by the mining inspector Franz Josef Muller (later Baron von Reicenstein), in the territory of Austria-Hungary.

In 1798, Martin Heinrich Klaproth singled out tellurium and determined its most important properties. The name comes from the Latin tellus, the genitive telluris, Earth.
