Useful properties and composition of cucumber extract

It has a cleansing and whitening effect on the skin due to the lysozyme enzyme. Cucumber extract is included in most moisturizing and refreshing gels and face creams, and is also intensively used in the composition of eye creams, moisturizing sprays and toners for the face and body. Cucumber extract contains polysaccharides, polyphenols, glycosides, vitamins and amino acids. Polysaccharides have the ability to bind water. They maintain the level of hydration of the skin, act as emollients, and soothe inflamed skin. The antioxidant properties of cucumber are provided by the presence in its composition of organic acids (gallic, coumarinic, cinnamic and other acids). Cucumber is interesting with the content of one more substance: cucurbitacin (the name comes from the Latin name for the botanical family of pumpkin, Latin Cucurbitaceae). It is this substance that provides a peculiar bitter taste of melon crops. Now studies are underway on the medical properties of cucurbitacin, because Plants with a high content (for example, the so-called «Vietnamese cucumber») are used in folk therapy for the treatment of cancer.
